Fire from heaven, or fire from God, was used for punishment; it consumed and destroyed those who sinned against Him as in Sodom and Gamorrah. In the last days, fire from God will kill the unrepentant, and their smoke will ascend forever. The Bible says that the righteous will walk on the ashes of the dead.
Fire from God also showed his acceptance of sacrificial offerings, as mentioned many times in scripture.
